Costa Rica

My Favorite Places

Costa Rica was one of the most memorable trips of our life.

My husband and I traveled to Costa Rica a while ago. I wanted to experience a virgin rain forest- see Toucans and Macaws, Ocelots and Sloths. After long research, we chose Costa Rica, to Tiskita. It was one of the most memorable trips of our life.

Getting out of San Jose was a nightmare all of its own. We had rented a little jeep, which was not available at the airport, so the car company drove us to their city location to pick it up-we probably would have been OK from the airport, but navigating the city was incredibly confusing! After about 4 1/2 hours, we finally managed to find our way out, and off we headed! But by now, it was getting dark, and the rains had started.

Around midnight, we made it to the coast. We found our first stop- Pacific Edge Eco Lodge, back then owned by George & Susie. Susie met us at the gate- neither of us could believe we found it in the dark! She walked us to our little casita, and we sank into sleep.

In the pre-dawn light of the morning, we awoke to inhuman howls and screams- a troop of howler monkeys was passing underneath our cabin on their way to the beach! Welcome to Costa Rica!

We eventually made our way to Tiskita Jungle Lodge, and it was everything we had wished for-howler monkey troops were overhead every morning and evening; we saw toucans and an ocelot. Sloths hung out in the trees and every bird imaginable was there. We could pick fresh fruit off of any tree, star fruit, mango’s, some kind of orange things. We saw amazing frogs, toads, lizards, and the largest butterflies too beautiful to describe.

And then there were bugs. Oh my gosh, there were bugs and critters! When the sun went down, the noise was deafening! Huge herds (?) of land crabs crawling down the hills to the beach, grasshoppers that were as long as my shoe landing on us as they fled the monkeys heading back from the beaches. Scorpions of all sizes, palmetto bugs, cicadas, and that was just what we could see. It was wild!

Today, Tiskita has added a pool, yoga, probably electricity, but from the pictures, it still looks to be as beautiful and tranquil as ever.  We loved every minute of it.
